This seaweed-based diaper offers a healthy sustainable alternative to traditional diapers! - Yanko Design

Well, I don't take a infant and nor exercise I have much experience with them, but I practise know when it comes to diapers, it can be an exhausting thing. Putting bated the whole changing and putting them on aspect, diapers have a whole lot of harmful side furnishings for the surround, and your infant. And if you lot call back fabric diapers are any better, well they're not. The absorbing fabrics used in cloth diapers are coated with polyester and polyurethane as well. Healthy and sustainable…not! But worry not, designer Luisa Kahlfeldt has come to our rescue with her Sumo diaper. The Sumo nappies have been created from a sustainable material chosen SeaCell. The material is basically seaweed and eucalyptus, making it naturally antibacterial and full of antioxidants, keeping your babe'due south bum soft and good for you! The mono-material pattern allows it to be easily recycled, without having to suspension downwardly any separate components.

The unique material inspired Kahlfeldt to partner upwardly with DITF, the German language Institue of Textile and Fiber Inquiry. With their assistance she processed, cleaned and wove the fiber, attempting to create a wholesome SeaCell Fabric.

Together they prototyped the first batch of SeaCell cloth!

SeaCell was then used to create 3 different layers, a soft inner layer that covers the baby's bum, a strong absorbent core, and a waterproof outer layer that seals the deal! The outer layer was created using a waterproof and recyclable material called EcoRepel, the brainchild of the Swiss Company Schoeller.

Kahlfeldt wanted to plow things even more than sustainable past abandoning traditional elastic bands. A lot of prototypes were created, and she even needed to supercede the usual hooks and fastenings that are found in traditional diapers.

Finally, she opted for natural knitting yarns called Natural Stretch, equally an alternative, ensuring that every single chemical element of the diaper is recyclable!

The last result is a healthier and sustainable culling to disposable and cloth diapers, a nappie that looks out not only for your baby only the surroundings as well, and as well one that won the 2022 James Dyson Honour!
